To put it simply, planning an extended overseas trip is one thing - overwhelming - It's impossible to plan what you’ll be doing in 3 weeks let alone in 3 months when you choose this lifestyle. I highly suggest choosing a point which you promise yourself you will stop your advanced planning at, this not only holds back your overpowering sense to control the whole trip by clicking onto a super tightly wound excel sheet you’ve created, but it also will give you something to do on those relaxing days on the beach. For us, our point was Vietnam - about 3 months from our first departure date.
The absolute worst part of planning was tying up all our loose ends, the crystal clear waters of Bali seem further than the horizon when you are trying to organise leases, insurance and vet bills for an indefinite amount of time. The main thing is to stay focused, remember as you count down those last days then hours at work the enormity of what is it you’re about to embark on.
This is a copy of our general plan for the first 3 months of our nomadic trip, even though it looks like I’ve just created one of those ruling excel sheets I told you not to, I haven’t. Although it is an excel sheet, it will in no way rule what our limitations are, for us, this is a guideline of where we want to go and how long we think we would like to spend there, but as always, it is subject to change. Right, let me walk you through it.
We started with a map of the world, and put each country into one of three columns . MUST, MAYBE & NO. We started to research our must and maybes and completely ignored the no’s. From there we put those countries into a yes or no column and all of a sudden we had the countries that we wanted to see.
Next we worked out what would be the most cost efficient way to maneuver through each country and in what order. After doing a bit of research (mainly using www.budgetyourtrip.com) we came up with a daily price limit, this included absolutely any cost we would need for that day, accommodation, food, drinks, bike hire fee etc. The only thing it doesn’t include is the expense of travel (flight, boat ride, bus etc.) that’s in the column to the left. Keep in mind the pricing is based on a couple.
Now we could be completely wrong with our planning but this was our honest money expense guideline when leaving Australia – for in depth expenditures on each country visit the countries tab.
