Once we arrived at the bus terminal we took a taxi to our hotel – Nasa Vegas Hotel – We were pretty happy with our room, for $13 a night we had a comfortable bed, fridge, air-conditioning, and much to my delight, a bath. A luxury we haven’t had in 4 months, even Justin got into the spirit and squeezed himself into the bath (not easy for a 6ft man in a SE Asian Country.)
The next morning we decided we would treat ourselves to breakfast at Nasa Vegas Hotel. When we arrived at the restaurant it was bitter sweet to see the buffet display ahead of us, sweet as it smelt delicious, bitter as we knew it was a luxury we couldn't afford. Nasa Vegas staff then informed us that buffet breakfast was only $5 per person, surely not we thought. We paid for the breakfast and ate so much that we didnt even think of food until 6pm that night. We decided that over-eating at breakfast and skipping lunch was so worth it, we would continue to do it every day of our stay at Nasa Vegas.
We ended up going to the popular backpacking district of Khao San Road, which wasn't as easy as first anticipated. We caught 3 trains and a ferry then walked 20 minutes and finally we had arrived. We wandered around and bought a few things I needed - a new wedding ring as the one I purchased in Bali was on the verge of snapping off my finger and a hand bag, which was in no better way than the ring. After sweating our little hearts out for hours we decided to head back to the hotel for a nights rest.
We decided to head to Samut Songkram, something our hotel concierge (yeah, we had one of those at Nasa Vegas) told us was ‘impossible to do on your own’ however, we suspected this was so we would book her overly priced tour. Samut Songkram is home to the famous train market, we thought it was worth a days outing of at least attempting to see. We caught 3 trains to get to Wongwian Yai, which was then to take us to via another train to Maha Chai, from there we could catch a ferry and one more train into Samut Songkram. Luckily for us though, as we pulled into Maha Chai station, the train scrapped along market stalls and brushed past their owners. We jumped off the train and realised, the next ferry and train was irrelevant to us, as we were seeing a train market right in front of us, without the hoards of tourists sniffing about.
Another day journey lead us along the Chao Phraya River, which is Thailand’s longest river. We jumped off at the Royal Palace before we ended up chatting to ‘Rudy’, the craziest, funniest and biggest ‘thumbs-up’ enthusiast we have met. We decided to get Rudy to take us to a few of the temples around, before dropping us at one close to Khao San so we could walk around there once more. |
Brace yourselves, you’re about to read the highlight of our Bangkok trip, you have the right to be more then a smidge excited. We walked the streets in search of a Fertility shrine which we had heard about, finally, we were rewarded and what a shrine it was, I don’t know if there is much else to say, I think the pictures say more than I ever could.
The last thing we did in Bangkok was head to a flow rider, poor Justin was in desperate need of a bodyboard, and although he paid for it with sore muscles and joints the following day, he certainly enjoyed himself. I better go, it’s our last buffet breakfast at Nasa Vegas before we head off. Bacon (real bacon) and eggs await me. |
